Jaundice or Icterus is a condition of an appearance of yellow coloration on skin and white part of eyes. It occurs because of the presence of bilirubin substance. Bilirubin is a yellow colored chemical which is a waste material. Bilirubin is yellow chemical in hemoglobin, the substance which is a carrier of oxygen through the body. When the RBC’s (red blood cells) break down, the body builds new blood cells to replace old ones. It remains in blood after removal of iron from hemoglobin in red blood cells. When the level of the bilirubin increases in the blood stream, it starts leaking out into surrounding tissues, making them yellow colored. The yellow color of the skin and sclerae varies according to the amount present of bilirubin in the blood stream. Bilirubin level, if become too high the yellow coloration of skin and white part of eyes converted to brown. In the human body, the liver is responsible for the filtration of waste material and also filtration of bilirubin from the blood. Once bilirubin is present in liver, it is secreted by in bile and then excreted.
